Two weeks ago, Callaghan slipped in the shower and split his head open. This happened the Saturday before the infamous PT appointment that shaded our current reality. The cut was down to the bone and he required 7 staples in the back of his head. It was a nasty cut and a painful experience and Scott and I were both upset and worried, but Callaghan was focused on making sure he got out of the ER in time to get to his friend's taekwondo birthday party. He made it to the party. And, he ran around with those kids as if nothing had happened just a few hours prior.

In the days since the PT sounded the alarm, I've been filled with an overwhelming sense of dread. With the weight of the potential challenges ahead, I realized this week that I had almost forgotten that Cal had that ER trip just a few weeks ago. At the time, that event seemed all-consuming. Now, it seems insignificant. But, what I hope to hold onto in the days, weeks, months, years ahead is Cal's focus on getting to the next celebration with friends. He doesn't want to dwell on the obstacles, so I will try to join him in his focus on the joy of life. Wish me luck.
